For over twenty years, Silk Road Music has been smashing stereotypes about Chinese music and taking Chinese instruments in new artistic directions. Its pioneering musical fusions have merged Chinese folk and classical music with Brazilian, jazz, Celtic, Spanish, Arabic, Aboriginal and blues music. Founded by Qiu Xia He (pr. Chu-sha Her), a one-time music teacher and touring musician in her native Shaanxi, China, the ensemble has earned a Juno nomination, two West Coast Music Awards and two Canadian Folk Music Award nominations. Most recently, the group has begun exploring sinified flamenco music and performing on-stage with flamenco dancers.
The pipa – a Chinese lute – will be surrounded with many world instruments, such as the flamenco guitar from Spain, and the oud, bouzouki, and lutes from the Middle East and Greece. Percussion instruments include pandeiro and sourdo from Brazil; musical bow and mbira from Africa; bendir from Morocco; kanjira tambourine and shanaii from India; gongs and wood percussions from Asia; and hulusi and bawu flutes from China’s Yunnan province.

Revels North Flood Recovery Fund
We are thankful for
the tremendous outpouring of support we have received from our friends and
neighbors since the Tropical Storm Irene flood inundated our storage space in
White River Junction, Vermont. Fully restoring the losses (estimated at
$45,000) will be a multi-year effort. (See video link below)
Though our flood and recovery efforts have caused us to put most of our
Revels Kids season on hold for 2012, there will be a Revels Kids program
in Pomfret beginning this coming Monday, January 23rd.
Our wonderful Pomfret leaders Sharon Groblicki and Marcia Bender have
offered to take on this adventure on their own this year. Revels North
is not able to offer staff and organizational support, but we are
delighted to be able to help them get the word out in the Revels
Community. To register your child for the Revels Kids program in
Pomfret e-mail
This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it
or call Marcia at (802) 672-1797 or Sharon at (802) 672-1244.
They will meet Mondays from 4:00-5:30 p.m. at the Pomfret school and
explore a wide range of traditional music, including songs from
Bulgaria, Georgia, South Africa, and England. They will dance and drum
along with the singing and present a folk tale from one of the cultures.
The chorus will begin on Monday, January 23 and run through Monday,
March 19. There will also be an option to sing in the Woodstock
Community Showcase the first weekend of April. We hope you will join the
Pomfret Revels Kids season if you can!
Thank you Sharon and Marcia!
